La Trobe University Library, Bendigo

The interior refurbishment of La Trobe University’s Bendigo Library adopts a measured approach to adaptive reuse, foregrounding the spatial and material integrity of the existing structure. The design supports the library’s evolving role—from a repository of information to an active environment for learning, collaboration, and community engagement. Minimal intervention, a strategic hierarchy of investment, and a consistent design language underpin the approach. The existing shell is retained as a framework, with new architectural elements inserted to provide essential infrastructure - supporting digital access, informal study, group work, and events. This adaptive framework ensures long-term flexibility while extending the building’s lifecycle. The library now functions as a connected, multi-purpose hub - linking students, researchers, industry partners, and the broader community across La Trobe’s regional network.
